Closed-Loop Composting
All of us can have our own household composting systems. It is not the hardest thing in the world to put aside food scraps for your composting system. It doesn’t have to be a large-scale operation either. Personally, in my own household, we casually compost and have already this year diverted around 160 lb. of food scraps to the compost instead of going to the trash can.
The soil that comes out of this food scrap composting is amazing. The soil is so dark and rich. You may also notice an increase in the earthworms in your soil. This is closed-loop composting. When this is done you are closing off a loop of consumption. Instead of shipping in food to your home and shipping out food scraps and waste you are keeping it at home.
Many cities can do this as well. Instead of shipping in high quality soil from farms or more rural settings cities can use food waste to better their soil quality. This could help divert countless tons of food waste being shipped to landfills and dumps. It could also help cities better their local food systems and allow them to produce more food within city limits.
